Flute Workshop

Session Date:  July 26 – 30, 2010 
Grades:  6 - 12
The schedule of the week of July 26- 30 is as follows
Monday – Friday: 
Session 1; Grades 6 – 8; 9 am – 12 pm ׀ Session 2; Grades 9 – 12; 1 pm – 4 pm

This intensive week long workshop provides young flutists invaluable instruction in flute study.  Designed for the serious middle school and high school flutist, this workshop focuses on a variety of musical topics; proper breathing, embouchure, productive warm up and practice techniques as well as repertoire and study materials.  Led by Dennis Carter; principal flutist with the Warren and Plymouth Canton Symphonies and  winner of the 2009 Detroit Music Awards for Outstanding Classical Instrumentalist.  Participants are expected to bring their own instruments.  The workshop culminates with a recital in the Macomb Center’s Stage II.

Registration Fee:  $145
Early Bird Discount if Paid in Full by June 4, 2010:  $125
Registrations remains open until start of workshop, based on availability.
Cancellation must be made 3 weeks prior to start of the workshop to receive a refund of $75.

About the Director, Dennis Carter
Dennis Carter has a Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance from Wayne State University.  His teachers were Ervin Monroe and Clement Barone. He continued his studies by winning an Orchestral Apprenticeship with Operalaboratorio in Palermo, Sicily and by invitation to attend Julius Baker’s Masterclass as a Performer.

He is well known as a soloist in the area having performed with the Wayne State University, Warren Symphony, Emerald Sinfonietta, National Association of Negro Musician Association-Collegiate Young Artist Concert, African American Composers Concert at Wayne State and with the Brazael Dennard Community Chorus.

He has toured the US with the NY Gilbert and Sullivan Players, The New Sigmund Romberg Orchestra and Carl Rosa Opera Company (UK).

Currently Principal Flutist with the Dearborn Symphony, he also holds that position with the Fisher/Masonic Theater Orchestra of Detroit, Warren Symphony and Orchestra Canton.  A busy Free-lancer, he has performed with the all of the area orchestras including Detroit Symphony, Ann Arbor Symphony and most recently the Michigan Opera Theater Orchestra.

 In addition to performing, Dennis taught flute for Henry Ford Community College, is an Assistant Teacher with the Southfield Public Schools Elementary Band and Orchestra and is a Performance Coach/ Theory Instructor for the Sphinx Preparatory Institute.
