A program for grades 7–12.

It’s an unforgettable week of song and dance. Hard work and camaraderie will result in artistic and personal growth. Students will have the opportunity to work with top-rated vocal clinicians and choreographers who are being brought to Macomb County to share their knowledge and skills. During this week-long workshop students will perform several new pieces of music in both small and large groups. Students will learn to sing and dance working with a vocal coach and choreographer. Students will also have an opportunity to audition for solos in the spectacular production performed on Macomb Center’s professional stage at the end of the week.

YOUR REGISTRATION FEE INCLUDES:

• Continuing Education Units (CEUs). CEUs are awarded for non-degree credit, self-improvement, personal development, and skill upgrade programs. Transcripts may be requested listing workshops completed.

Snacks, pop and water are available for purchase during all workshops. You are also welcome to bring your own snacks, lunch and beverage.

WORKSHOP PRESENTERS

Harvey Kahl, Jr., Director

Harvey Kahl, Jr. joined the staff of Macomb Community College in 1985. In addition to the Show Choir Workshop, Harvey directs the Macombers and is staff accompanist for the college. He received a BM in Piano Performance from Wayne State University where he also studied voice and organ. Mr. Kahl is a free-lance musician, most recently playing keyboards in Menopause-The Musical at the Gem/Century Theater in Detroit. Harvey is currently serving as organist for the First United Methodist Church of Farmington and has been active in church music since 1980.

Andy Haines, Artistic Director/Choreographer 

Andy Haines has been a free-lance Choreographer for the past 21 years. After finishing a BA from Ohio State University, he began a career as a performer and choreographer in musical theater productions as well as choreographing Miss America State Pageants. Andy has been quite active on the show choir circuit for a number of years. Broughton High School "Carolina Spirit," Findlay High School "First Edition," Grosse Pointe South High School "Pointe Singers," and Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School "West Side Delegation" are groups currently performing his choreography. These groups have all been consistent finalists in top competitions around the country, and at one time or another, have been named Grand Champions of Showstoppers National and International Competitions eight times in the past nine years. This is Andy's 22nd year at Macomb's Show Choir Workshop.

Annette M. Layman, Choreographer 

From Durham, NC, Annette is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has completed work in dance education at UNC-Greensboro and Meredith College. In 1989 she was hired to establish and direct the dance program at C.E. Jordan High School in Durham for 9th through 12th grades. After three years in public education, Annette began a freelance career in 1992 and has choreographed and adjudicated for schools and other educational organizations from coast to coast including the Brightleaf Music Workshop in North Carolina, Showchoir Camps of America in Illinois and Ohio, the Southern Utah Performing Arts Festival, FAME Events of Arizona and the Butler Summer Showcase in Kansas.

In addition, she served as staff choreographer for Goingbarefoot Productions as well as adjudicator and clinician for various showchoir festivals around the county and choreographer of the Durham Public Schools' auditioned group, "Spotlight." In March 2001 she was privileged to make a presentation on choreography for the middle school/junior high school choir at the American Choral Directors' Association national convention in San Antonio.

Annette's work involves kids from 7 to 70 and has included other projects such as "The Duke Children's Hospital Celebrity Classic" with honorary chairman, Perry Como, and then Jeff Foxworthy, the re-opening celebration of Durham's historic Carolina Theater, directing past years productions of the "Duke Show" and working on other events for the Duke University Medical Center. Currently she is busy working on her new organization, Arts Mission, a non-profit dedicated to enriching lives through the positive impact of the arts. Its two main projects are the summer music workshops "Sing Out" for rising 4th, 5th, and 6th graders, and "Next Stage," for middle through high school aged students, both in Durham.

James D. Smith, Vocal Clinician 

James D. Smith is now retired after 40 years in music education. For eighteen years he was director of choral activities of Kenton High School. While in Kenton, his students regularly received top ratings in solo, ensemble, and full choir OMEA Events. He also started one of the first show choirs in Northwestern Ohio. During his twenty-two years at Findlay, the choirs consistently received superior ratings at State Contest, and the First Edition Show Choir was a finalist in every competition it entered since 1989, including the Showstoppers National Grand Champion in 2000 and 2005, and the FAME National Show Choir Cup Grand Champion in 2004. His final year he was director of First Edition's back up band, "The Boingers," and served as resource person.

JD is a graduate of Bowling Green State University where he received both his Bachelors and Master's degrees. He was a vocal student of Warren Allen, Rex Eikum and Andrea Poulimenos, and did additional study with Helen Swank of the Ohio State University. He studied conducting with Fiora Contino and Ivan Trussler. Mr. Smith is a certified O.M.E.A. adjudicator and presents clinics on show choirs, vocal technique, and vocal abuse--its causes and cures. Mr. Smith currently supervises student teachers through the BGSU College of Musical Arts.

J. Kevin Butler, Vocal Clinician

Kevin a graduate of Indiana University, is a highly respected clinician, adjudicator and choral director. He has served as Associate Director of the Indiana University Singing Hoosiers, Musical Director for the Chicago Children's Choir and at numerous high schools in Indiana. Mr. Butler has served on the staffs of many summer music camps including the Indiana University Summer Music Clinic, Macomb Show Choir Workshop, Brightleaf Music Workshop and the internationally known, Show Choir Camps of America.

Mr. Butler is an active soloist and musical theater performer in Indianapolis, IN, performing roles in musicals such as The Wizard of Oz, Sweeney Todd, Li'l Abner, Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Annie and 1776. He is the author of a manuscript on the history of the American Musical Theater and a show choir production manual. He serves as the artistic director for the Indianapolis Men's Chorus and is a respected private voice teacher and vocal coach.

Duane Shields Davis, Vocal Clinician 

Duane Davis, originally from Cleveland, has taught in the Grand Rapids, Michigan area since 1969. He is presently the Director of Vocal Music at Grand Rapids Community College. Duane is a recipient of the Giants Award, recognizing community leaders and is the recipient of the Excellence in Education Award, presented each year to a GRCC faculty member, and most recently was presented the Maynard Klein Choral Award, by the American Choral Directors Association, Michigan.

Duane has served as musical director for Circle Theater, Robeson Players, Actors Theater and others. He has served as director of the Blue Lake International Choir on numerous European tours. He also prepared and directed a chorus to represent Grand Rapids on a tour of Japan. Duane's community college vocal jazz ensemble, Shades of Blue, has performed at IAJE conventions as well as MusicFest Canada in Vancouver, BC. His college choir has performed at Carnegie Hall and the American Choral Directors Association Choral Hour. Duane has served as guest director for DODDS Atlantic Choral Festival in London, England. For several summers, Duane served as director of The Disney-Grammy All American College Singers at EPCOT for Walt Disney World. These singers performed with and opened concerts for Nell Carter, Rosemary Clooney, Mercer Ellington, Maynard Ferguson, Lionel Hampton, Eartha Kitt, Ramsey Lewis, Cleo Laine, Arturo Sandoval, Maureen McGovern, Della Reese, Dianne Reeves, Diane Schuur, Billy Taylor, Toni Tennille, Leslie Uggams, Joe Williams and others.

Duane has served as Chorus Master for Opera Grand Rapids since 1986. He conducted the opening ceremonies for the Walt Disney World Animal Kingdom. Duane has served as guest conductor for the Manhattan Concert Productions Masterwork Series in performances at Carnegie Hall. He has also conducted Gold Company of Western Michigan University in New York City at Town Hall and Grand Rapids Community College's Shades of Blue in a feature concert at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center, and Alice Tully Hall, New York City, as part of the Manhattan Concert Productions Vocal Jazz Invitational. Duane's choirs have toured throughout the United States, Canada and Europe.

Duane has twice been commissioned to compose a work for orchestra and chorus, which was premiered by the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra. Along with numerous workshops and clinics, Duane has conducted All-State and regional choirs throughout the United States and Canada. Duane is the 2003 Arts Award recipient, presented by the Arts Council of Greater Grand Rapids. He recently presented two workshops at the 7th World Symposium on Choral Music in Kyoto, Japan, conducted a seminar for the Tokyo Choral Directors Association and was guest artist at the Riga, Lativia Choral Festival. In March of 2006, Duane again conducted the National Community College Festival Chorus at Carnegie Hall.
