Macomb Symphony Orchestra presents Scotland The Brave
The Macomb Symphony begins its thirty-seventh season with an evening devoted to the music and culture of Scotland.
With fierce pride in their heritage, Scots have celebrated their roots in song and dance for hundreds of years. The natural beauty of Scotland has been a source of pride for its people, as well as a fascination and inspiration for composers from around the world. We will get a taste of what is so captivating and fascinating by visiting the “land of heather” through music and art.
Mendelssohn’s overture, Fingal’s Cave, captures the composer’s Scottish trip and especially the wild and windy Hebrides Islands off the west coast. The Scottish Rhapsody #3 (Tam o’ Shanter), inspired by a famous poem from Robert Burns, is the work of native son, Sir Alexander MacKenzie. Perhaps the greatest living Scottish composer is Thea Musgrave…represented by her stirring Scottish Dance Suite. Plus, much more - - including the Celtic Pipes and Drums and The Lake Area Scottish Dancers.
Orkney Wedding, with Sunrise by Peter Maxwell Davies will conclude the orchestral portion of the evening. Representing the rising sun, a Highland bagpiper, marches on stage to bring the concert to a rousing conclusion.
