Inspired by Italian folk tales of the Nativity and the Magi, Amahl and the Night Visitors tells the story of a poor crippled boy and his mother. They are visited late one night by three kings on their way to see the newly born Christ child. Written by Gian Carlo Menotti, it was the first opera commissioned specifically for television, premiering on NBC in 1951.
