Evolved from the "Rap Ballet"
The Hiplet Ballerinas are the professional company of the Chicago Multicultural Dance Center. Hiplet™ was created by Artistic Director Homer Hans Bryant & evolved from the “Rap Ballet” of the 1990s. Specifically designed to make ballet accessible to all people, Hiplet is a fusion between classical pointe technique, hip-hop, and a variety of other dance styles. Their name derived from hip-hop and ballet, Hiplet (pronounced Hip-lay). Hiplet’s performances incorporate the rhythms of African drums with Tchaikovsky, arabesques and beat-boxing, and even tango en pointe—all while showcasing Hiplet’s trademark sass, hip movements and struts—against recognizable popular music from Black Violin to Beyoncé and Prince.
